Research carried out by Gartner found that 41 per cent of organisations utilising IT outsourcing are doing so in order to improve performance and outcomes, up from just 28 per cent that said the same in 2005.
Some 47 per cent of firms did say, however, that lowering or controlling expenditure remained the primary objective for IT outsourcing.
Allie Young from Gartner said that that a 'maturing' outsourcing market will mean that providers must improve their offering.
"In addition to cost competitiveness, providers must create a vision for outsourcing that accentuates other business or IT impact to appeal to a maturing buyer set that will eventually seek more value," she said.
However, a recent study from Capgemini indicated that decision-makers at senior levels in firms are failing to manage databases and exploit information to its full potential. Some 83 per cent of respondents said that major decisions were made without the correct information to hand daily.
The report revealed that 88 per cent of firms currently outsourcing anticipate their usage to remain moderate or high over the next two years, compared to 67 per cent last year.
